GMC Prep School hosts summer Band and Musical Theatre Camps

Students at Georgia Military College Prep School are in for a fun week of activities at the Fine Arts Camps. The first session of band camp for students in grades 8-12 kicked-off July 11-15 for the flag corps and drumline. The camp introduces Georgia Military College’s (GMC) new Director of Bands, James Brewer, to the Bulldog Brigade. This year’s show is a Latin inspired party theme titled “La Fiesta.”

“The flag corps will learn the basic fundamentals, understanding the movement of their bodies, and how to make their presence bigger on the field,” said James Brewer, GMC Director of Bands. “For percussion it’s really finding where everybody fits. This week what we’re trying to figure out is where each student’s strength is to decide if they’re marching, in the front auxiliary percussion, or a little bit of both.”

The second camp session for the entire band will start July 18-22.

The Prep School is also hosting its first Middle School Musical Theatre Camp on July 12-15. The theme is “Arabian Nights” featuring the music and story from Disney’s Broadway Musical “Aladdin.”

“The camp is a new piece that I think will help generate interest in the middle school musical that is coming up in February,” said Mark Weaver, GMC Prep School Fine Arts Director. “It’s a wonderful thing to offer to our students and it’s also a recruiting tool.”

The production is coordinated by GMC’s new Prep Theatre and Dance Director, Jenny Morris, who is teaching choreography, music, vocals, acting and improvisation to nearly 50 students.

“We just decided to do “Aladdin” because it’s a Disney favorite and it’s a great show and the kids love it,” said Jenny Morris, GMC’s Prep Theatre and Dance Director.

On Friday July 15, the students will showcase what they’ve learned throughout the musical theatre camp to their parents at noon in the Goldstein Center. The students will perform “Aladdin” on February 23-24, 2017.
