GMC Prep Basketball Coach Achieves 800 Career Wins

GMC Prep School Basketball Coach Achieves 800 Career Wins

It’s been an exciting season for the Georgia Military College Prep School basketball team. The team took home a win on February 6, 2019 vs. Stratford Academy with a score of 67-57 in the first round of the Region 7A tournament. It was a big win for not only the team, but for the team’s coach, James Lunsford. The win against Stratford Academy marked Lunsford’s 800th career win.

Lunsford has had a long career in basketball, coaching at Baldwin County and Twiggs County High Schools before coming GMC Prep School in April of 2010. Lunsford says achieving 800 career wins is a dream come true.

“It feels awesome to hit this 800 win mark,” Lunsford said. “It takes a desire to work with student-athletes in order to be successful on and off the basketball court. This dream has become a reality through hard work, desire, effort, long hours of preparation, and a supportive staff and administration. None of this would be possible without them in my corner.”

GMC Prep School Athletic Director, Steven Simpson, says Lunsford has done an outstanding job of building a basketball program at GMC Prep.

“Coach Lunsford is creating a tradition of winning and excellence on the court and beyond,” Simpson said. “He does a tremendous job of helping our young men learn the values that this institution stands for. His approach prepares our guys to be successful not only on the court, but in the community too – and that’s pretty important.”

Simpson says he’s proud of Lunsford for achieving this career milestone.

“Coach Lunsford has contributed so much to this community in his 40 plus years of coaching in and around Baldwin County,” Simpson said. “I’m just glad that GMC Prep School could play a small part in his journey to this milestone.”

Congratulations to Coach Lunsford on this exciting career accomplishment!
