Community Service
Servant Leadership on Display in Our Communities
Since 1996, GMC has participated in an annual nation-wide community service project, Make A Difference Day, and has been recognized for its students’ efforts by USA Today Weekend magazine. Each year, Make A Difference Day has been strongly supported by the local community, which has demonstrated that our efforts to engage the community in improved volunteerism and service have been successful.
GMC also encourages and awards our students to get involved and volunteer in their local communities, and we organize a great many of these efforts through our student activities programs. Each campus has a designated employee who collects and records community service volunteer data. This program is used to record community volunteer hours performed by students, faculty, and staff. GMC recognizes students, faculty and staff who volunteer at least one hundred hours of community service, within one year, with the Distinguished Order of the Servant Leader award and the Presidential Volunteer Service award. The DOSL award is posted on the student transcripts.
In 2013 and 2014, GMC was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This federal recognition highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful and measurable outcomes in the communities they serve.
Making a difference is not just a day at Georgia Military College – it is a way of life.
