GMC Prep Student and Teacher Recognized as 2020 STAR Honorees
Georgia Military Prep School Student and Teacher named 2020 STAR Honorees
On Thursday, February 13, 2020, the Milledgeville-Baldwin Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) luncheon, honoring successful senior students across Baldwin County. At Georgia Military College Prep School, the Chamber selected student, Carson Waters. Waters selected his Biology teacher, Major Emily Boylan, as his STAR Teacher. The Chamber awarded Waters a $500 scholarship, and Boylan $100, at the luncheon at the Club on Lake Sinclair on Thursday.
The STAR program identifies Georgia’s outstanding high school seniors. To be selected as STAR Student, a senior has to have the highest score on the SAT in one sitting, and be in the top 10%, or top 10 in their class. The chosen students are then given the opportunity to choose a teacher that has been instrumental in their academic development.
Waters, an 18-year-old senior at GMC Prep, has been accepted to the University of Georgia, where he plans to attend this fall, majoring in Biological Sciences with a focus in Pre-Dental studies. Waters says the recognition of STAR Student is a blessing.
“When I found out I’d been selected as STAR Student, I couldn’t help but feel blessed,” Waters said. “I’m thankful for those around me who’ve encouraged and allowed for my success, and for my Heavenly Father who’s set all of my plans into motion.”
Waters says he selected Boylan as his STAR Teacher for a number of reasons.
“Major Boylan displays true mastery and complete understanding in her subject area of teaching,” Waters said. “She taught us in unique ways, making sure to attempt to appeal towards each student’s learning style. Even beyond her effective teaching, Major Boylan always pushes each of her students to be their very best, both academically and morally.”
This is Boylan’s second nomination as a STAR teacher. She says it’s the highest honor, and a great recognition.
“Here at GMC Prep, we are driven with the desire and the passion to develop the intellect and elevate the character of each of our students,” Boylan said. “When a student recognizes me for my teaching, I feel like, ‘WOW! I am on the right track!’ I am carrying out the mission and making a positive difference.”
