GMC Knocks Off Lackawanna 20-8 In Regular-Season Finale
As Williams Set School Record For Wins
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Georgia Military College has faced a heavy dose of adversity all season and Sunday’s regular-season finale was no different as the Bulldogs went into the game without its full complement of players.
But the Bulldogs dug down deep and pulled off a 20-8 win over Lackawanna College here at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on the Marshall University campus.
With the victory, GMC finished the regular season with a winning record at 6-4 and also gave head coach Bert Williams his 119th win with the Bulldogs in his 15th season on the Milledgeville campus.
That moves Williams past GMC coaching legend Lew Cordell, who compiled a 118-36-7 record at GMC from 1936-58.
Williams now has an impressive 119-41 mark at GMC, which also includes a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship in 2001.
“I can’t even explain how it feels,” Williams said following the game. “Honestly, it’s kind of surreal and hard to even think about being talked about with someone who had such an impact on this school. I am honored just to be thought of with him today. I’m just proud of these kids for overcoming the adversity. They did a great job.”
GMC scored on its second possession when Jordan Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) got loose on an 86-yard run to put the Bulldogs up 6-0 with 11:36 to go in the first quarter.
GMC pushed the lead out to 13-0 on its next possession when Jovon Robinson (Memphis, Tenn.) broke free on an 84-yard scoring run with 7:16 remaining in the opening quarter.
The lead when to 20-0 at the half when Julian Williams (Suwanee, Ga.), a wide receiver who was moved into emergency quarterback duty on Sunday, hit Keinan Lewis (Anderson, S.C.) on a 17-yard scoring strike with just 2:34 left in the first half.
Williams, who came into the contest as the team leader in receptions with 37 to go along with 498 yards and four TD catches, took over the primary quarterback duties along with some backup from Emanuel Byrd (Albany, Ga.).
Lackawanna finally got on the scoreboard with 3:59 to go in the game when Terry Norris scored on a 19-yard run.
Trevon Wesco’s run on the two-point conversion made it 20-8 as Lackawanna cut the GMC lead to 12.
But that would be it as GMC recovered Lackawanna’s onside kick attempt and the Bulldogs were able to run out the clock to secure the record-setting victory.
GMC was also once again hit by injuries as the Bulldogs lost defensive lineman Royce Turnbull (Charlotte, N.C.) and Zentavius Cobb (Lawrenceville, Ga.) during the game.
Cobb, regularly a defensive back, had also been moved into emergency place-kicking duties and gone 9 of 11 on extra points.
Following the game, the Bulldogs presented Coach Williams with a game ball and plaque on the field to commemorate the win.
“We certainly challenged ourselves this week with some injuries and some other issues,” Williams said. “But I told the guys that I don’t think I’ve been prouder of a group to come out against a really good team and find a way to get the win. It’s one I’ll never forget.”
Lackawanna closes its season at 5-5.
