GMC Football Rolls To 63-0 Win Over Atlanta Sports Academy

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia Military College posted a trio of 21-point quarters as the Bulldogs rolled to a 63-0 win over Atlanta Sports Academy on Military Appreciation Day Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field.
The game was delayed 46 minutes by Atlanta Sports Academy’s transportation issues, but GMC showed no ill effects from the late start and jumped out to a commanding lead.
“We did some good things offensively and felt good about how we were going to match up,” GMC head coach Bert Williams said. “Tyler (Herman) threw the ball well and receivers made the catches. We did a good job running the ball, too. It was to see the offense go out there and click.”
GMC (4-4) scored less than five minutes into the game on the Bulldogs’ opening drive as Tresvon Coakley (Johns Island, S.C.) scored on a 1-yard run for a 6-0 lead.
Coakley came right back and scored again on another 1-yard run and a two-point pass from Tyler Herman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) to Dominique Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) put GMC up 14-0 with 8:40 left in the first quarter.
Herman’s 5-yard run with 2:50 to go in the opening period finished off the first of the three 21-point quarters for the Bulldogs.
GMC’s three second-quarter scores came when Quez Nesbitt (Greer, S.C.) scores on a 36-yard run, Herman hit Julian Williams (Suwanee, Ga.) on a 15-yard strike and Jovon Robinson (Memphis, Tenn.) scored from 31 yards out to make it 42-0 at the half.
Herman now has 20 TD passes in eight games this season.
After a scoreless third quarter for both teams, GMC finished off the scoring with three more TDs in the fourth quarter as Herman hit Nesbitt on a 24-yard scoring pass, Coakley scored on an 18-yard run and Rakeem Benjamin (Sumter, S.C.) found the end zone on a 24-yard run.
Coakley finished with three TD runs while Herman had two TD passes and a TD run and Nesbitt ended the afternoon with a scoring run and TD reception.
“Tresvon stepped up and gave us some good snaps,” Williams said. “And Quez, we said that we need to get the ball in his hands more. He’s a home-run shot anytime he gets his hands on the ball. He’s not a super big guy, but he can really scoot.”
Zentavious Cobb (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was also pressed into emergency place-kicking duties for GMC and converted 7-of-8 on extra points, including his last seven in a row.
“That first one, I think he was a little nervous,” Williams said of Cobb’s first attempt. “But he did a pretty good job from there. He’s probably our second or third-leading scorer on the day.”
The 63 points also marked a season-high for GMC while the Bulldogs’ defense recorded its first shutout of the season and third time it has allowed six points or less.
“It’s always good to get a goose egg on defense,” Williams said. “They played hard. I think anyone with a helmet played today. I thought the defense did a really nice job with that.”
