Georgia Military College Prep School senior Rudy Mills was recognized as a top academic scholar in Baldwin County during the Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program held Thursday, February 28, 2008, and hosted by the Milledgeville Chamber of Commerce.

Rudy Mills began attending Georgia Military College in the eighth grade and currently serves as Battalion Commander in the Army JROTC, the highest leadership position for the prep school. He performs with the Precision Armed Drill Team and participates in varsity track and field. Rudy is a member of the Science Club, the Yearbook Staff, the School Newspaper Staff, the National Honor Society, the National Spanish Honor Society, the National Junior Beta Club, and Youth Leadership Baldwin. Further, Rudy is an active member of his church’s youth group, an avid photographer with his own website (www.rudymills.net), and a distance runner.

Rudy’s awards and special recognitions include Mercer University’s Presidential Scholarship (full tuition), the Military Order of World Wars Award of Merit, past Vice President of the Science Club, past Drill Team Commander, Drill Team State Championship (third place-Male Individual Exhibition), State Technology/Engineering Fair (first place-Computer Literacy), State Technology/Engineering Fair (first place-Team Programming) and varsity letter in track and field.

Rudy named Mrs. Lynn Owens as his STAR teacher stating that she invested a great deal of personal time in helping him succeed. He said, “She always challenged me to the fullest extent of my ability; and even in times that I could not see the whole expanse of my potential, she always could and always helped me make use of it.” Mrs. Owens said that Rudy had a plan to excel in math so he could pursue a medical career. She said, “Rudy had a goal in mind, and we worked together to strengthen his skills. He certainly reached his goal.” Rudy will attend Mercer University’s School of Liberal Arts to study biology, pre-med and Spanish in the fall of 2008, and then Mercer University’s School of Medicine to become a medical doctor. His parents are Sherrie and Taron Durden of Gray, Georgia.
