West Point Partnership
(Milledgeville, GA) April 12, 2006 – MG Peter J. Boylan, USA (Ret.), President of Georgia Military College, announced today that the school has furthered its relationship with the United States Military Academy at West Point by being designated as a service academy preparatory program military junior college in the Association of Graduates’ West Point Preparatory Scholarship Program (WPPSP).
The WPPSP was established in 1979 in conjunction with the Director of Admissions, United States Military Academy. The program is designed to provide partial scholarships for an additional year of post secondary school education at preparatory schools and military junior colleges for carefully selected and highly motivated young people seeking admission to the United States Military Academy.
According to Lt. Col. Edward Shelor, USMC (Ret.), GMC Chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences Division, and Project Officer for the West Point partnership, \”The tremendous progress at GMC made under the leadership of General Boylan has helped in both academics and improvements to the school\’s infrastructure. These enhancements have allowed us to enter an elite group of only four military junior colleges participating in this partnership with the West Point Association of Graduates.\” Shelor said that GMC was selected because the school offers the academic courses required by WPPSP\’s Academic Board and meets the academic requirements for students who will be offered the
scholarship. Additionally, the students in this program will be required to maintain their military physical fitness standards.
In addition to Georgia Military College, other military colleges participating in the West Point Preparatory Scholarship Program include, Marion Military Institute, New Mexico Military Institute and Wentworth Military Academy.
Georgia Military College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate Degrees.
