Major Fred Eaton To Compete In Army Ten-Miler
MAJ Fred Eaton will represent the ROTC Battalion of Georgia Military College by competing in the 18th annual Army Ten-Miler this year. The race will be held in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, October 20, 2002, with the start and finish lines at the Pentagon. The Army Ten-Miler is a showcase of the most outstanding athletes from military installations around the world and is America’s largest ten-mile race, with 18,500 runners. MAJ Eaton was selected based on his performance at a ten-mile time trial conducted recently at Fort Gillem, Georgia. His time of 62:41 was the second fastest of nearly two-dozen participants and well below the standard of 75 minutes. He has been following a stringent training schedule, running an extra 50 miles on top of the regular physical training runs he leads GMC’s Early Commissioning Program cadets in 3 days a week. MAJ Eaton is Assistant Professor of Military Science at Georgia Military College. He resides in Milledgeville with his wife, Helene, and his children, Beki, age 3, and Charlie, age 2, who lovingly support him by making sure he’s in his running shoes and on the road by 4:30 in the morning. This will be the sixth time MAJ Eaton has participated in the Army Ten-Miler, and he has set a personal goal to finish the race in the top 100, by running a 5:35 mile pace.
