GMC Middle School softball team still unbeaten

GMC Middle School softball team still unbeaten Brent Martin CNHI The Union-Recorder Tue Sep 28, 2010, 08:00 AM EDT https://unionrecorder.com/localsports/x124778212/GMC-Middle-School-softball-team-still-unbeaten MILLEDGEVILLE — The GMC Middle School softball team may not taste a defeat this season after pulling off another fantastic string of victories to boost their record to 15-0 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs took on Strong Rock Christian at the Baldwin County Rec. Department in a double header Sept. 20 and swept their opponent 11-1 in game one and 9-5 in game two. The 9-5 victory is quite alarming considering the large leads GMC Middle usually builds up during the season. In game one Sutton Long was the winning pitcher and Taylor Long led all batters by hitting a perfect 2 for 2. In game two GMC’s Sarah Margaret Mason was the winning pitcher. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, the Lady Bulldogs battled Louisville at Couch Field and put on quite a show offensively, pouring it on 17-5. Sinclair Harding garnered two hits in the game and Kaylie Harding, Katie Lewis, Katie Murner and Whitley Dunn each connected for singles. GMC’s Sarah Margaret Mason got a double in the contest. In this game, pitching coach Tom Hanson got a chance to work with a committee of solid pitchers as Sutton Long pitched the first three batters and struck out all three on 15 pitches. Karlie Harding then pitched the second inning and faced three batters, recording one strikeout and one walk in 15 pitches. Taylor Curtis pitched the third inning and 5 batters in the fourth inning, for a total of 11 batters faced between the two innings — pitching 35 pitches with one strikeout, one hit allowed and five walks. The final inning was pitched by Kaylie Harding, who faced four batters, pitching 16 pitches and recording three strikeouts. She also recorded one dropped third strike that created an unearned base. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Macon Sept. 23 and faced FPD for a double header and proved once again that they are one of the best in Georgia in their age division. In Game One, GMC Middle shut out FPD 9-0 and three players batted a perfect 3 for 3: Kaylie Harding, Sutton Long and Taylor Long. The Lady Bulldogs came back in game 2 and were equally as dominant, winning 14-2. Sarah Margaret Mason had her best stuff on the mound once again and was the victor. The Middle School girls will play again Thursday at Washington-Wilkes and will also play in a tournament in Atlanta Friday and Saturday. “We could play up to seven total games if we win the tournament,” said head coach Jennifer Spencer. “We are really excited about the tournament. We are going to meet some teams we have met before and some we have not. It will be new and it will be some good competition for us.” The GMC girls won the same tournament, ironically called the Bulldog Bash, last year. Spencer also hopes the team can conserve the powerful arm of Sutton Long for the weekend tournament. “We don’t need her on Thursday and we are trying to get a Friday game switched,” she said. “We are going to have the other girls to practice Thursday. We will need more than just Sarah Margaret [Mason] and Sutton [Long] in Decatur.”
