Eighth Graders Learn About Hazardous Waste

Georgia Military College Prep eighth grade students have been studying Hazardous Wastes and learning about the safety precautions “HAZMAT teams” follow. Students ran tests on unknown solids from an unknown mixture to determine chemical and physical properties in order to identify the solids. Such tests included electrical conductivity, density relative to water, density relative to ethanol, and reactivity with copper chloride. Pictured (1), Hunter Pearson, Brandon Davis and Liam Fairbrass perform a copper chloride test. Pictured (2), Rob Butler, Ashley Vinson and Joanna Barksdale identify unknown liquids A and B from an unknown mixture by testing the miscibility in water, then ethanol, and testing for corrosiveness and toxicity.
