June 12, 2010 GMC Prep Varsity and Middle School cheerleading squads rack up at NCA Cheer Camp at GCSU Special to The U-R CNHI MILLEDGEVILLE — It was an incredible week for the GMC Prep Varsity Football/ Competition Cheerleading Squad. The girls attended the NCA Cheer Camp atGCSU earlier this week. Each day the girls workedand practiced for 13 hours alongside cheerleading squads from all over the state. Some of the things they learned included new cheers, dances, chants, jumps and stunting techniques. The last day of camp required each squad to perform in front of the entire camp, and awards were given out for different categories. GMC Prep received many awards including: Superior Evaluation for cheers and chants, Varsity Motions Award for having the best cheer/chant/stunt motions, VarsityGame Day Cheer Champions which qualified the team to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and an invitation to compete at Nationals. Perhaps the teams biggest accomplishment was earning the TheHerkie Award, which is given to the one team at campthat is selected as the best overall. On top of these accomplishments, several girls were nominatedto try out foran All- American title: Meg Gray, Macie Lee,Leanna Harbor, Sarah Poole,Murphie Dunn, Kenley Jones, Brooke Waddell and Brittany McKleskey. Two of these girls were named All-Americans: Sarah Poole andLeanna Harbor. Finally, two members were given special awards for their leadership within the squad: Brittany McKleskey and Murphie Dunn. The GMC Middle School Football/ Competition Cheerleading Squad also had an amazing week. Starting Sunday the girls worked with certified NCA cheerleaders to learn the proper stunting and cheering techniques that would insure safety. They also learned many new cheers, dances, chants, jumps and, most of all, team bonding while competing with other cheering squadsfrom all over the state. The MS girls worked hard for four days, two of which were 13 hours long. The girls performed all the things they learned in front of the NCA staff, family members and their new cheering peers. Each squad was judged on each performance and then awards were given out in different categories. The Middle School girls received several awards including: Two Superior Evaluations for cheers and chants, Middle School National Championship Bid Award that allows them to compete in the NCA All-Star National Championship in January for their outstanding achievement, Middle SchoolGame Day Chant Champions, which qualified the team to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the NCA Spirit Stick for character and school spirit throughout the week. In addition, eight of the girls were nominatedto try out foran All-American title: Stephanie Gorham, MaKayla Harrison, Kristin Kuehn, Rachel Merica, Lillie Williams, Kaitlyn Weaver, Jami King and Niki Thomas. Rachel Merica won the All-American title for her outstanding cheering skills. Congratulations to all these girls for their commitment and hard work to make the GMC cheer teams a huge success!
