GMC Prep girls’ basketball uses camps to improve
(MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.) – Completing a 60-game basketball schedule is quite a feat, especially when it is accomplished in a three-week period.
The Georgia Military College Prep girls’ basketball team did just that this month, playing 20 games a week while participating in three, one-week, team-oriented basketball camps.
“We’ve played a lot of basketball, and we got a lot of experience,” said Head Coach John Griffin. “We played enough games so everyone on the squad could get a lot of minutes on the court, and it shows. We have improved immensely over the last three weeks.”
The Lady Bulldogs took part in two Georgia College & State University team camps in Milledgeville, and the squad traveled to Gainesville for the Brenau University team camp.
“Our focus has mainly been on offense,” Griffin said. “We’ve really concentrated on perfecting our half-court and secondary break offensive sets, and the girls have done a great job. We haven’t pressed at all, and we haven’t played any man-to-man defense. It has been all about offense.”
The Lady Bulldogs wrapped up their last day of camp on Wednesday with eight games at GCSU. They won some and lost some, but the improvement was evident.
“You can see how much better the girls have gotten,” Griffin said. “Our overall athleticism has taken huge strides, and our shooting is further along than it has been before.”
With the camps completed, the girls will now shift their focus away from basketball – at least until November.
“Most of these girls will now focus on softball for a few months,” Griffin said. “But we’ll see them back here in the fall.”
The Lady Bulldogs will resume practice in early November, with the first regular season contest scheduled for Dec. 1 against Prince Avenue in Athens.
